4 Ways to Save Money on Your Monthly Expenses

Believe it or not, majority of people pay their bills without looking at what they are paying for. It makes it especially easier now that you have the option to receive a paperless bill that goes directly into your email. In fact, companies like it that you opt for the paperless bill. It not only saves them money, but it helps reduce paper waste. The caveat is that you are less likely to look at your billing statement.

For the past year or so I have made it a habit of taking a look at my monthly expenses to see where I can cut costs and save. Living in New York City for the past 5 years has taught me the importance of keeping an airtight budget. Everything costs and arm, leg and an organ so you always make sure you get the best deals. Call it cheap if you want, but it’s a jungle out here and I gotta eat. Like every millennial trying to make it out here in these streets with student loans knockin’ on our door, we have to be strategic. Strategy is key, which is why we can’t let these companies take our hard coins.

Now that we are entering a new year, I want you to go into it with a different perspective. I challenge you to look at your billing statements ASAP to find ways to cut your monthly expenses. You’d be surprised how much you can save with these 4 tips.

    1. STALK YOUR BILLS – Gather your statements and troll them to see if something does not look right. If something is off or you feel as though you can get a better deal it’s time to start doing some of your research.
    2. CALL YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER – Once you stalk all of your bills and do some research, you should start calling our service provider to see if they can cut costs or apply a promotion for you. Most of the time they will be happy to help you especially when they pride themselves on excellent customer service. While you’re on the call remember to be NICE because nice people finish first! Trust me, ask and you shall receive. Going into the call with the right mindset always helps.
    3. BUY YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT- When it comes to any utility bill such as your Internet bill, buy your own modem. It may be a large expense up front, but in the end, you will end up saving a ton of money. These companies make so much money off of these leases and rentals.
    4. SHOP AROUND – You might not even be with the best company that has the best deal. This is why you should be open to switching service providers. Remember before you make your change to weigh the pros and cons.


Transparency is key, which is why I’m going to give you a personal example of how I saved on my Internet bill. After stalking my bills I decided it was time to buy my own Wi-Fi modem on Amazon for $95.00. My Internet service provider was charging me an extra $16.00 a month to lease a modem I didn’t realize I was leasing. To think I’ve paid them $192.00 for the year to lease for something that costs $95.00. Luckily, all it took was a simple purchase to cut my cost down significantly.
